Chemically Consistent Evolution of Galaxies on Cosmological Timescales and the Dla Galaxy Population

چکیده

We describe the evolution of galaxies in a chemically consistent way accounting for the increasing initial metallicity of successive generations of stars. The enrichment of various types of model galaxies is compared with Damped Lyα (= DLA) abundances over the redshift range from z ∼ 0 through z > 4.4. We discuss properties and composition of the galaxy population giving rise to DLA absorption. Beyond evolution of individual galaxies a change is found in the composition of DLA galaxy samples from high to low redshift. Spectrophotometric properties are predicted for optical identifications of DLA galaxies.

Chemically consistent evolution of galaxies: Spiral galaxy models compared to DLA systems

We have extended our chemical and cosmological galaxy evolution model to calculate the abundance evolution for altogether 16 different elements in spiral galaxies in a chemically consistent way which is a considerable step towards a more realistic galaxy modeling. All observed element abundances in DLA systems have been compiled. The comparison with our model calculations yields the following r...

We have compiled all available data on chemical abundances in damped Lyman alpha absorption systems for comparison with results from our combined chemical and spectrophotometric galaxy evolution models. Preliminary results from chemically consistent calculations are in agreement with observations of damped Lyα systems. 1 Models of galaxy evolution Our model is most briefly described as kind of ...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Chemically Consistent Evolutionary Synthesis

To account for the range of stellar metallicities in local galaxies and for the increasing importance of low metallicities at higher redshift we present chemically consistent models for the spectral and chemical evolution of galaxies over cosmological timescales. We discuss advantages, limitations and future prospects of our approach.
